Edge Profiles for Wooden Worktops: A Nutshell Guide

If you order wooden worktops from Worktop Express®, each one comes pre-sanded and with square edges as standard. Whilst some may prefer the chunky look of a square-edged worktop, our fabrication team can apply a range of different edge profiles that customise the look of your worktops to make them appear softer, or more detailed – depending on which would suit your kitchen.

Worktops with an edge profile have a more ‘finished’ appearance, whilst creating a hardwearing edge that is less prone to damage sustained from impacts. If considering other customisations such as radius corners or ellipse ends, do bear in mind that an edge profile will enhance the overall look of these additions – so don’t forget to add it on when placing your customisation order via our Online Worktop Customisation Tool.

Choosing an edge profile

Pencil Edge Profile

By far our most popular edge profile, a ‘pencil’ edge is relatively small but creates a much softer edge without encroaching too far into the worktop.

This smooth edge profile is perfect for worktops in a busy kitchen environment, and suits almost any kitchen design – modern or traditional. For a truly ‘finished’ look, consider having it on both the top and bottom edge of the worktop.

Rounded Edge Profile

Similar to a pencil edge profile, our rounded edge profiles give a worktop a very soft appearance, but have a radius that is more than double the size of the pencil edge alternative.

Available on both the top and bottom edges of a worktop, this finish is ideal for high traffic or family kitchens where square edges are not advised.

Chamfered Edge Profile

The chamfered edge profile is a great alternative to our softer edge profiles; more angular than pencil or rounded profiles, but still attractive and hard-wearing.

This edge profile is ideal for an ultra-modern kitchen or a classic Shaker kitchen with clean lines throughout. Choose from a 6mm or 12mm chamfer on either the top and/or bottom of your worktop.

Ogee Edge Profile

The perfect edge profile for traditional or farmhouse kitchen themes, this detailed finish is perfect for adding character to any wooden worktop, but works particularly well on classic lighter timbers such as oak or ash.

We recommend opting for an ogee profile on the top edge of the worktop, with a pencil edge on the bottom to finish the look.

Ordering edge profiles

Any of the edge profiles we offer can be added to your worktop for only £5 per linear metre, and are recommended to complement a number of other customisations (such as Belfast or undermounted sink cut outs).

If you are placing your order via our Online Worktop Customisation Tool, adding an edge profile of your choice is very straightforward: simply click the edge profile button to add a profile to the edge of your choice, or select a profile when adding your sink cut out.

If ordering via telephone or email, be sure to clearly stipulate which edges you would like a profile on when submitting your fabrication diagram. Our team will send it back for confirmation before submitting your order, so do ensure you have chosen the right edge profile for each edge before paying.
