“We purchased oak worktops for our utility room from Worktop Express last year, and are now thinking of cutting the worktop to fit an overmounted kitchen sink with drainer. Are you able to advise us on how best to go about this?”

Answer

It is certainly possible to create a cut-out for a sink with a drainer at home, and fortunately, wood work surfaces are one of the easiest materials to cut. If you have any prior experience of using wood-cutting equipment and tools, the process should be relatively easy.

First, check the measures required for your sink cut-out and draw a guide in pencil onto your worktop. We strongly recommend double-checking these measurements before commencing any cutting work. If in doubt, cut a slightly smaller hole than you think you require, as additional wood can be cut away after if necessary, but it is a lot harder to remedy if over-cut!

In some cases, you may have to leave additional room – particularly if your sink is a mixer tap or one that includes any extra features such as instant boiled water. Please make sure you check the specifications of your chosen tap before ordering your customised worktop.

Once you have drawn on your guidelines, use a holesaw to cut through the worktop at each of the four corners – this will make the overall cutting process a lot easier.

Next, use a worktop router (designed for use on wood worktops) to slowly cut a straight line through the worktop between each of the four corners.

You can also use a jig saw or circular saw for this task, but we recommend using a worktop router and jig with clamps to ensure the cuts are straight. Always check the blade is sharp, and wear eye protection. You may like to practice on some scrap wood before beginning.

Once your sink with drainer is in place, don’t forget to seal it with a silicone sealant to prevent any water ingress.
